GROUP 15 - Music Video 2008/9

Friday 14 November 2008

Here my friends, is a screen grab of our Final Cut project as it looks now the video is done. You'll note we've got many layers. We could have reduced them to less but we edited in multiple layers and then dragged each scene into about three layers.

If we'd left it messy it would have been very hard to add motion later on. We didn't clean up the amount of layers much though, as you can see. Also, we've got quite a few sequences. Alex Fraser liked to edit using sequences, I didn't, but each to their own. So yeah, that's it. Don't you just LOVE editing?

MUSIC PRODUCTION CRITICAL EVALUATION: PART 1

>>> Due on
Moodle by 9am Monday 20th October

MUSIC PRODUCTION CRITICAL EVALUATION

Part 1 should be about 1500 words in length and should consider the planning, shooting and editing to rough cut stage. You should make use of your blog as a reference point throughout! Where you refer to real examples for comparison, give web references and as much detail as possible e.g. artist/song and video director.

Introduction

Explain what task you did for the AS production and how this one differs from it.
(e.g. thriller/kids Tv)

Part One
Explain briefly how the work came about and what the tasks were.
(Talk about learning more techniques for final Cut, analysing some real music videos and looking at student examples, talk from promo director, music range of choices, etc)

Which band/artist did your group choose and why?
(give some positive reasons here)

How did you ‘pitch’ for them?
(summarise briefly)

Where did you get your ideas from? Cite actual examples as shown on your blog!

What tasks had to be done in the research and planning phase? How were these handled and what could have been done to improve them?
(talk about storyboarding, animatic, organising places, props, equipment, people)

How did the group come to decisions about approaches to the tasks to be completed? (what range of options did you consider and why did you opt for the choices you made?)

What roles did the various people in the group take on? Concentrate particularly on your role in the various activities.

Talk about any test footage you shot. What did you learn from doing these tests and from the animatic?

Write about the shoot. What went well/badly? what could you have done differently?

Consider your early editing and how you reached the rough cut stage. Outline this process and discuss decision-making you undertook.

What does the group feel about the rough cut? What feedback have you had from director/ other students etc? what still needs to be done?

ROUGH CUT

Tuesday 30 September 2008

Some music video analysis.

The first video we'll be putting up for analysis is Justice's D.A.N.C.E. We know this has already appeared earlier in the blog, but it's a pretty good example of the kind of thing we're trying to achieve. Let's watch.

That was hella good right? Anyway, the first thing you might notice about the video is the fact that it's very colourful. Indeed, it is. Also there's lots of cutting to the beat, the whole video is quite reactive to the song, which ours will be too. This video however isn't VERY related to the music, whereas in our video, with the inclusion of woman's "powers", we think it will also be nicely related.

Here's another video in a similar style to the last one. Kanye West's Good Life. Hit it.

Mm, similar right? We're pretty sure Justice's video came out first, and also, Kanye West had a go at Justice at a music video award for beating him with their Justice Vs Simian video a while back, so he COULD be trying to get himself an award by doing what they do. Right? Maybe not. Anyway, this is closer to the style we're trying to get in our video, because it's a rap song and the rappers are in it. It still maintains the cartoony style, so this video proves that the theory works.

Also, at 2:55 there's a TV! SHOCK! That's one of our ideas! The similarities are endless, by coincidence I assure you.

SO there we go, a little analysis, a little banter, a little bit o love, seeya.

Test Footage

we decided we wanted to test out if i split screen idea actually worked , so we used the wire tool in final cut , with some footage in the green room , infront of various different colours, we didnt lip sync this properly at all but overall the footage was fairly sucessful and the split screen worked well as you can see here below ,

enjoy.

Some 2am ideas.

The following is written by Alex Noble

It's 2am right now, but I just woke up and had some ideas for the video, thought about writing them down but I'd no doubt lose the paper, so here's the scoop, blog style.

Firstly, we'll need two guys to do the lyrics obviously, I've looked at the group a bit more and I think it's two guys, anyway that's all I can hear in the track. At the start there's a kind of, I don't know what kind of beat that is but I like it, we'll have lots of small squares, in different colours, filters you know, and each one will display something random, something small, it's not important.

Anyway, as the lyrics come in we'll have both guys taking up 4 small squares, so they'll be on th left of the right, either way, the squares can interact with each other, so for example the dude could tap the other guy on the shoulder, through the squares, this would be cool for the chorus when a guy gets his head made into a TV by the woman with the "POWERS!", he'd be running around the screen and you'd see him go between squares, bothering the people in each square. In that way they'd become like films of seperate rooms, but they'd sync up at other points, time wise of course.

I quite like the idea of having a focal point, because without one the video will lack direction, people won't know where to look, it would be cool to make a confusing artsy video but this isn't electronic music we're using here, this is something a bit more mainstream, so it's gotta have a somewhat mainstream video. Well maybe not, but the song's kinda silly and so should the video be.

ANYWAY, yes, a focal point, one square bigger than the others, we'd have smaller squares around it showing different things, I like this idea because it gives the entire video more replay value, you might notice things when you rewatch it that you didn't before. For this purpose I would want to put some interesting stuff happening in the other squares, maybe some references to other songs and TV shows and stuff, just to personalise it a bit and add some laughs. Not that it won't be funny enough already.

There's a bit in the middle of the song, apparantly it's called a "bridge", where we lose the tune and they go into pure rap mode. For this i'm thinking a camera that kinda zooms in and out with the beat, i'd call it a "pulsy" camera. Make sense? Black and white maybe, both dudes in one square, camera below them, hands doing that pointy thing.

Also, I considered how the squares would move, change sizes and positions, two options. 1. We have some crazy video effects to smoothly make them move around, resize, merge. Might be hard. 2. We change the layout with each beat except on the chorus bits where we only move the smaller squares. I like the second idea the best to be honest. Also for the first bit we could have a wall of squares, and change a few of them each beat but not all of them.

Also how about some mouths at the top all saying POWERS with a letter in front of each one spelling out POWERS. Beneath that maybe the girl zapping the guy, or something. I'm imagining some lovely modern, sometimes symetrical, well thought out and generally awesome looking editing here. I think i'm alright with the olde editing software so I don't think this will be a problem, but I don't think we should leave editing as an afterthought for this one, we need to decide most of the stuff now so we can film it according to how the editing will best complement it, if that makes sense, and you know it does.

SLEEP NEEDED, ALEX OUT. (Alex Noble that is)

The plan.

The video would start with various squares on the screen each showing a separate piece of video. One might show a guitar being played, one might show a face, a shoulder, pretty random. The whole video will be cut up into bits, but it won't be hard to follow coz we'll always have one main square to focus on and other squares that complement it.

There will be various shots of a woman being sexually suggestive, and she'll point at the other squares and things will happen in those squares, weird things. Like people's heads being changed into TVs, some guy getting stuck inside and iPod, this backs up the word "POWERS" which is very clear in the chorus.

And prepare for a big surprise at the end.

In one shot we might have a shirt saying POWERS on it, here's an example video.
